How to make spider web balloons

If you're planning a halloween party to remember, now's the time to get making props and decorations for the event. One of the coolest ideas I've seen is balloons filled with 'spider webs' (right), which makes for a really spooky effect. You'll need access to some helium, and ideally a substance like hi-float which will allow for the heaviness of the balloon's contents. But once you've collected these together, this is a really quick and easy project.

What you'll need:
- HI-FLOAT
- 11-inch clear latex balloons
- Small rubber spiders
Instructions
- Inject a little less than the usual amount of Hi-float into an clear balloon and rub it around to coat the inside.
- Put a small rubber spider inside the balloon.
- Inflate the balloon to about 75% of the full-size with air.
- Seal the balloon with a plastic disk or clip. Let it dry overnight. Place the balloon out in the open where there is good air circulation. It must be very dry in order to form the spider web.
- The next day remove the clip and deflate the balloon.
- Hold the balloon by the stem and the top as shown to the right below, and stretch it a few times to separate the dry film from the wall of the balloon.
- Slowly inflate the balloon with Helium or air.
- When the balloon is almost full-size the Hi-Float film will separate from the wall in several places and hang inside the balloon to form a spider web.
-If the coating does not separate, deflate the balloon, stretch it a couple of more times and reinflate it.

Use permanent glue to attach vinyl bugs to rose petals.
Paint vinyl snakes using black acrylic paint; let dry.

Halloween Test Tube Shooters

1 package (3 ounces) orange-colored gelatin powder, such as orange, peach or apricot
1 cup boiling water
1 can (15 ounces) peaches, apricots or pears in juice or extra-light syrup, not drained
2 1/4 cups purple grape juice (see note)
1/4 cup hot-chocolate mix (see note)

Mix gelatin powder and boiling water until the powder completely dissolves, about two minutes. Puree the canned fruit in a blender or food processor until completely smooth. Mix with gelatin and divide between 18, 2-ounce test tubes. You should fill each test tube about halfway. Refrigerate until firm. Heat the grape juice in a sauce pan until simmering. Stir in the hot-chocolate mix until it dissolves. Refrigerate.

To serve, fill the test tubes with the grape-juice mixture. Poke a skewer down the sides of the test tube into the gelatin so that the grape-juice mixture flows down creating dark stripes through the orange gelatin. Makes 18 servings.

Note: For adults; in place of the grape juice mixture substitute with 2 1/4 cups sparkling wine.

Why not make a Creepy Candy Jars for your Halloween Party, then fill them with candies and see who can guess how many candies are inside. The winner goes home with the special candy jar. Here are the direction from Better Homes and Gardens

Materials You Will Need:
Lidded glass containers in a variety of sizes
Glitter felt; orange and black
Felt; black, purple, orange, yellow, red
Plastic-foam balls (we used Styrofoam balls);
4-inch (Dracula), 3-inch (cat), 2-inch (bat)
Acrylic paint: black, blue, green, pink
Black dimensional crafts paint
Crafts foam: black, green, white, purple
Small black buttons
Green florist cloth wire (cat whiskers)
Wiggly eyes
Glue gun and low-temperature hotmelt adhesive

Instructions:
1. Referring to the photos for color choices, cover the jar lids with felt. Cut a circle from felt about 2 inches larger than the diameter of the lid. Glue the felt to the top, and then cut slits in the felt all around the edge. Fold down and glue the cut felt to the edge of the lids; trim off excess fabric.
2. Paint the foam balls and let them dry. Cut off the bottoms to flatten. Then glue them to the tops of the jars.
3. Paint Dracula's cheeks pink and let the paint dry. Add a mouth to both the bat and to Dracula using dimensional black paint. From green foam, cut the cat's mouth and add the details with the dimensional black paint. Set it aside to dry.
4. From foam and glitter felt, cut ears, mouths, hair, noses, teeth, and wings. Attach them to the heads with hotmelt adhesive.
5. Measure the Dracula jar and cut glitter fabric for the cape that wraps halfway around the lid. Glue it to the lid. For his bow tie, cut and tie a 2-x-4-inch piece of red felt. Glue it in place.
6. Wrap orange glitter felt around the jar, overlapping ends at the front. Cut points at the overlap to resemble a vest front. Glue it to the jar, and then glue small black buttons down the front.
7. Cut out six 8-inch lengths of green florist's wire. Bend them into wavy shapes to form whiskers. Bend one end of each piece to a 90-degree angle, apply a small amount of adhesive to the end, and then push it into the foam ball under the cat's nose.
8. Glue all wiggly eyes into place.

Directions:

1. Cut a thin slice from the bottom of a round watermelon to provide a stable base.
2. Cut a circular piece of the rind from the top of the watermelon that is big enough to reach into while removing the flesh. Carefully remove that top section and reserve for later to be used as a "lid".
3. Remove the flesh from inside the watermelon using a melonballer, reserving the melon balls for snacking or a fruit salad.
4. Once flesh is removed, drain any excess liquid from inside the watermelon.
5. Using a pen or knife, draw or scratch the outlines of eyes, nose, mouth, hair, ears or any other feature you want on the side of the watermelon. Then, following the outlines cut the features into the watermelon and remove excess rind. To create a 3-D effect with the features after you have cut them into the melon, push gently on the flaps of rind from inside the watermelon. (You can use toothpicks to prop the rind, if you want.) Be creative!
6. A safe, battery-operated lamp can be firmly placed inside the watermelon to provide a haunting glow.
7. Place the circular piece of rind that you reserved back on top of the watermelon and your Jack O' Melon is ready to be displayed.

Ingredients:
30 fresh strawberries

8 ounces of chopped white baking chocolate

1 teaspoon of shortening

1/8 teaspoon of almond extract

1/4 cup of miniature semisweet chocolate chips

Directions:
Wash the strawberries and gently pat with paper towels until they are completely dry. In a microwave safe bowl, melt the white chocolate and shortening at 50% power and stir until smooth. Stir in the almond extract. Dip the strawberries in the chocolate mixture; place on a waxed paper lined baking sheet, allowing excess chocolate to form the ghosts' tails. Immediately press chocolate chips into coating for eyes. Freeze for 5 minutes. In a microwave-safe bowl, melt remaining chocolate chips; stir until smooth. Dip a toothpick into melted chocolate and draw a mouth on each face. Yield: 2-1/2 dozen.

Ghost in the Graveyard
Serves 1
2 ounces black vodka
2 ounces creme de cacao or coffee-flavored liqueur
1 scoop vanilla ice cream
Pinch of finely grated nutmeg, for garnish
In a glass, combine vodka and creme de cacao, and set aside. Place a scoop of ice cream in a highball glass, and slowly pour vodka mixture over ice cream. Garnish with nutmeg; serve immediately.

Screwed-Up Screwdriver
Serves 1
1/4 cup ice
1/2 cup freshly squeezed tangerine juice
1 1/2 ounces black vodka
1 black licorice twist, for serving
Place ice in a tall glass. Pour juice into glass. Pour vodka over the back of a cocktail spoon into glass so it sits on top of juice and creates a layer of black. Slice 1/4 inch off each end of licorice, and use as a straw. Serve immediately.

Berry Scary Martini
Serves 1
1 cup ice
1 ounce black vodka
2 ounces cherry juice
Fresh raspberries and blueberries, for garnish
Combine ice, vodka, and cherry juice in a cocktail shaker; shake vigorously. Pour into a martini glass. Thread raspberries and blueberries onto a cocktail skewer, and place in drink. Serve immediately.

Banana liqueur
Coconut rum
Orange curacao
Cream
Grenadine
Whipped cream

Directions:
1. Combine Oranje Van Gogh vodka and banana liqueur into a shaker with ice. Shake and pour into the bottom of a shot glass.
2. Combine coconut rum, orange curacao, cream, and a dash of grenadine (for color). Shake with ice and gently layer on top pouring over the back of a spoon.
3. Top with whipped cream.

Steps:

Cut out several spooky shapes from black paper or cardstock with scissors or a craft knife. Our cutouts were of things like rats and mice, spiders, and other creepy-crawlies.

For the red accent on the black widow, cut an hourglass shape out of the spider's abdomen area and tape a piece of red tissue paper over the cutout on the back side.

Punch a small hole in each shape with a hole punch or cut a hole with scissors or a craft knife.

Slip the legs of a brad through the hole and attach the cutout to the outside of the lantern by poking the brad through the paper lantern and separating the legs of the brad.

Insert a hanging bulb style fixture.

To disguise the cord, sew a tube of fabric at least two times as long as the lamps cord. Insert the cord and bunch the fabric together.

Bloody Eyeball Martini

2 oz gin or vodka

1/2 oz dry vermouth

1 olive eyeball

Instructions
1. Place gin and vermouth in a cocktail shaker with ice.

2. Gently shake and pour, straining the ice, into a martini glass

3. Garnish with an olive eyeball.

How To Prepare ice "eyeballs"

per eyeball:

1 radish

1 pimiento stuffed green olive

The "eyeballs" should be prepared a day before your plan on use them.

Step 1: Peel radishes, leaving thin streaks of red skin on to represent blood vessels.
Step 2: Using the tip of the vegetable peeler or a small, knife, carefully scoop out a small hole in each radish, roughly the size of an olive.
Step 3: Stuff a green olive, pimiento side out, in each hole.
Step 4: Place 1 radish eyeball in each section of an empty ice cube tray. Pare the radishes down a bit to fit, if necessary. Fill the tray with water and freeze overnight.

How To Make A Frozen Hand

A fun Halloween attention getter. A fake hand is frozen in a disposable glove and then slipped into a punch bowl.

How to Make A Frozen Hand:

Ingredients
1 (10 ounce) package frozen raspberries, thawed
2 1/2 cups cranberry juice
2 envelopes unflavoured gelatine

Directions:
To make the frozen hand: Wash and rinse the outside of a rubber glove. Turn glove inside out and set aside. In a 4 cup measuring cup, combine the thawed raspberries and cranberry juice.

Pour 2 cups of the raspberry mixture into a small saucepan. Sprinkle the gelatine over and let stand 2 minutes. Warm over low heat, stirring constantly, just until gelatine dissolves. Mix back into the reserved raspberry mixture in the measuring cup.

Pour raspberry mixture into the inverted glove. Gather up the top of the glove and tie securely with kitchen twine. Freeze until solid, or several days if possible.

Carefully cut glove away from frozen hand. Place frozen hand, palm side up, leaning against side of a large punch bowl.
